While a CAT (Cable Avoidance Tool) acts as the “receiver” or “ear,” the Genny acts as the “voice,” sending a specific frequency through a buried utility so it can be easily traced.

A Genny is used when a utility is “dead” (like a plastic water pipe with a tracer wire or a de-energized power cable) or when a specific line needs to be identified in a crowded area. It applies a signal using three primary methods:
You physically attach the Genny to a valve, a meter, or a de-energized cable using a crocodile clip. A second lead is attached to a ground stake pushed into the earth to complete the circuit. This sends the signal specifically down that one line.
If you can’t access the pipe directly, you place the Genny on the ground above where you suspect the utility lies. It “induces” a signal through the ground and onto the metal pipe or cable below. This is convenient but less precise, as the signal can “bleed” onto nearby lines.
A circular “clamp” is plugged into the Genny and clipped around a live pipe or cable. This safely induces a signal onto the utility without needing to strip wires or make a physical metal-to-metal connection.
